#16 Beyond the Braai

Building meaningful connections

December 2024

Summer in South Africa isn't just about sunshine and braais, many experience moments of disconnection during this festive season. Let's explore evidence-based ways to strengthen our social connections and support our community.

The Science of Connection and “feeling good”:

Our brains are wired for social engagement – positive interactions trigger oxytocin release and activate our reward pathways, quite literally making us feel warmer and more content. Research shows that even brief meaningful connections can significantly boost well-being. Or as we say in SA: “Everybody loves a good jol.”
Here are practical steps you can take, backed by behavioural science:

For yourself:
Your brain loves a solid plan and you're way more likely to actually do it.
Leverage implementation intentions: Instead of saying "I'll reach out more just now," set specific micro-goals like "I'll phone Thandi every Tuesday at 10 AM." This activates our prefrontal cortex's planning circuits and makes follow-through 3x more likely.
Want to meet people?
Create reciprocity loops: Ask neighbours to rock up for a braai or pull in for a street gathering. Our brains are particularly receptive to shared experiences involving shared food and a celebration. Really, who doesn't love a lekker get-together?

“Everybody loves a good jol.”

For others:
Drop a simple “Howzit!”
Use the "mere exposure effect" positively: Regular, casual greetings to neighbours or local shop owners build familiarity and comfort over time. Even these small interactions contribute to community well-being.
More than the nod.
Practice active constructive responding: When someone shares good news, get genuinely excited for them. This strengthens neural pathways associated with positive social connections. Because good vibes matter!

Challenge for our network: This week, reach out to someone who might appreciate a connection and get concrete then and there. Maybe it's a voice note, maybe it's a coffee invite. Small actions, big impact.

Remember: Building connection isn't just kind – it's an investment in our collective brain health and community resilience. That’s the real meaning of Ubuntu.

What steps will you take to strengthen your social connections this season? Let's discuss!
