"My fellow South Africans..."

When these words echo through Parliament each February, the nation listens. This characteristic opening by President Cyril Ramaphosa signals more than just the start of SONA - it marks a moment of collective attention and shared national focus.

While millions tune in to SONA via television and radio broadcasts, the journey of engagement continues long after the speech ends. Through the dedicated SONA website, this crucial national moment transforms into a conversation between government and citizens, providing a central hub where South Africans can access, understand, and track progress on national priorities throughout the year.

The State of the Nation Address represents more than just a speech - it's a crucial opportunity for national dialogue and citizen engagement. But how do we ensure this vital information reaches and resonates with all "fellow South Africans"? This is important in a world where fake news, misinformation and disinformation are rife.  Ensuring that there is a reliable and evidence based resource is critical to citizen empowerment.

This is where behavioural science becomes transformative in public communication:

1. Breaking down complexity: Research shows that when complex policy information is presented in clear, digestible formats, public engagement increases significantly. By structuring SONA content into thematic pillars and providing regular progress updates on the website, we're making national priorities more accessible and actionable.

2. Salience matters: Citizens are more likely to engage with and remember information when it's presented in ways that connect to their daily lives. The SONA website serves as a living platform that brings government priorities closer to people's everyday experiences, with regular updates throughout the year on implementation progress.

3. Sustained engagement: Traditional one-off communications have limited impact. By creating a central digital hub for SONA-related updates and progress tracking, we're shifting from a single moment to an ongoing national conversation that keeps South Africans informed and engaged year-round.

Proud that our team at BCA has been working alongside the The Presidency of the Republic of South Africa to apply these behavioural insights in practice, making SONA communication more accessible and impactful for all South Africans.

Have you visited the SONA website? What role do you think behavioural science can play in improving government communication? We'd love to hear from you!
